Only the current owner can transfer ownership, and only to an active admin in the business. The transfer happens in Settings → Team & access → Team, and it's guarded by a typed confirmation because it's immediate and changes who ultimately controls the workspace.
Before you start
- You must be signed in as the owner.
- The new owner must already be an active admin. If they're staff or a manager, promote them to admin first through the normal role change — the transfer deliberately doesn't auto-promote anyone.
How do I transfer ownership?
Open the team settings
Go to Settings → Team & access → Team and open the transfer-ownership action.
Pick the new owner
The picker lists only eligible people: active admins other than you.
Type the confirmation phrase
The dialog asks you to type an exact phrase naming the business and the recipient — the same pattern as deleting a repository on GitHub. This is what stops an accidental click-through.
Confirm
Ownership moves immediately. The recipient becomes the owner; you remain in the business with your new (non-owner) role.
What the owner role actually means
The owner is a deliberate superuser — granted every capability, including ones added in future releases, so no update can ever lock the owner out. A few actions are owner-reserved on top of admin:
| Owner-only action | Where |
|---|---|
| Enforcing two-factor authentication org-wide | Settings → Team & access → Security |
| Transferring ownership | Settings → Team & access → Team |
| Directly editing team members' locked legal names | Profile change requests route to the owner |
See Roles and permissions for the full model.
Common questions
Why isn't the person I want listed?
They're not an active admin. Promote them to admin (and make sure their account is active, not invited or suspended), then reopen the dialog.
What happens to my account after transferring?
Nothing is deleted — you keep your account and history, minus the owner-reserved powers.
Can support transfer ownership for us?
The in-app flow is the intended path. If the owner is unreachable (left the company, lost access), contact support — that's an identity-verification conversation, not a settings toggle.
