Which currency your messaging balance is in

Why your messaging balance shows CA$ or US$, how Owneli picks the currency, why it can't change later, and the sales tax on a Canadian top-up.

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Your messaging balance, the prepaid money your texts and WhatsApp messages use, is kept in Canadian or US dollars. Every amount in the wallet names its dollar, such as CA$50 or US$50, so a receipt never leaves you guessing.

How Owneli picks the currency

The wallet takes your business's currency the first time money goes into it:

Your businessWallet currency
Sells in Canadian dollarsCanadian dollars (CA$)
Sells in US dollarsUS dollars (US$)
Sells in another currency, and is in CanadaCanadian dollars (CA$)
Sells in another currency, anywhere elseUS dollars (US$)

Your business's currency and country are under Settings → Business → Region & formats. If you have no country set there, Owneli uses your main location's country.

Message prices are set in each currency, and the wallet shows the price of a text, in its own currency, beside Text and WhatsApp.

The currency can't change later

Once your wallet has its first top-up, or any other entry, its currency is fixed for good. Owneli never converts a balance from one dollar to the other, so changing your currency or country afterwards doesn't change the wallet.

If you're setting up a new business, set the right country and currency in Region & formats before your first top-up. A wallet with entries from before Owneli offered Canadian dollars stays in US dollars.

Sales tax on a top-up

If your billing address is in Canada, the sales tax Owneli collects for your province or territory is added on top of a top-up: GST or HST, plus QST in Quebec. The province in your billing details sets the tax, and the summary shows each tax line and the Total before you pay. No tax is added for a billing address outside Canada.

Your balance gets the top-up amount before tax. For example, a CA$50 top-up billed in Ontario charges your card CA$56.50 and adds CA$50 to your balance. The receipt Owneli emails you lists the tax, with Owneli's GST/HST registration number.

Check your currency

Go to Settings → Plan & data → Billing and open Messaging wallet. The balance and every line of Balance history show CA$ or US$.

Common questions

Can you switch my wallet to Canadian dollars?

Not once it has any entries. If the currency looks wrong for your business, contact Owneli support.

Why don't I see a tax line?

Your billing address is outside Canada, or your billing details aren't filled in yet. Add them when you top up: Billing details asks for your address, and the province sets the tax.

Can I top up in the phone app?

No. Top-ups are only on the website. The app shows your balance and history under Settings, Billing.
