Go through a membership's rules at the counter

Before a client pays for a membership at the counter, go through how its sessions work and record that they agreed, or send a pay link instead.

Updated Oct 21, 2026

When you sell a membership at the counter, Owneli asks you to go through how its sessions work with the client first, and records that they agreed. A client who knows what each month includes, and what happens to sessions they don't use, is far less likely to dispute a renewal later.

Before you start

  • Who can do it: anyone who can run checkouts.
  • Set the plan's rules and terms first. What each period includes, carry-over, pauses and your own Terms & conditions all come from the plan. See Memberships.

Sell the membership

Add the membership to the sale

Under Add to cart, select Memberships and choose the plan. See Take a payment.

Move on from the cart

When you continue to the tip or payment step, How the membership sessions work opens.

Go through it with the client

Read the list with them. It shows the plan's rules, such as what each period includes and what happens to unused sessions, followed by your own terms.

Record their answer

Select The client agreed once they've agreed. The sale carries on to payment, and Owneli records who confirmed it and when.

Not ready? Select Not now. The sale carries on, but the counter won't take a card or cash for the membership until the client agrees: the Charge button, such as Charge $95.00, opens the rules again.

Let the client agree on their phone

Send a pay link instead of taking payment at the counter. The client sees How your membership sessions work on the payment page and ticks I have read how the sessions work and agree. before their card details open.

Where the agreement is kept

Open the membership from Retail → Memberships sold, or from the client's Items. Under Sessions and agreement it reads, for example, The client agreed to how sessions work in person on the date, with the name of who confirmed it. An agreement made through a pay link or online reads online instead.

Some memberships have no agreement, and say why:

It readsBecause
Assigned by staff: no client agreement was needed. You assigned the plan from the client's profile, without a sale
Received as a gift: the rules below applied.Someone bought it for them as a gift
No agreement was recorded for this membership. It was sold before agreements were recorded

If a client disputes a membership charge with their bank, the agreement is part of the evidence Owneli puts together for you. See Respond to a card dispute.

If something goes wrong

"Go through how the membership sessions work with the client before taking payment"

The client hasn't agreed yet. Select Charge again, go through the rules, and select The client agreed.

"Could not load the membership rules"

The connection dropped while the rules were loading. Close the dialog and continue again.
