Out of the box, Owneli refuses to put two appointments on the same provider at the same time. Turn on Allow double-booking under Settings → Booking, on the Online booking tab’s Booking rules card and overlaps become deliberate: the booking succeeds, both render side by side, and you're told exactly what it stacked on.
Can two clients be booked with the same provider at once?
Only when your business has switched it on. The setting reads: "Let staff book or drag an appointment onto a slot a team member is already booked in. Overlapping appointments render side-by-side on the calendar. Off by default; conflicts are blocked."
| Setting | Booking into an occupied slot | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Off (default) | Refused | "That slot was just taken — pick another time" |
| On | Succeeds | "Booked, overlaps another appointment" — naming the client and the clashing booking's reference |
The refusal is enforced by the database itself, not just the screen — two front desks racing for the same slot can't both win, and the loser is told the slot went.
What stays blocked even with overlaps on
- Time blocks — lunch, training and other blocked time still refuse bookings.
- Rooms and equipment — a required resource that's already in use blocks the booking regardless: "A required room or equipment is double-booked at that time". See Assign rooms and equipment.
- Online booking — public clients are only ever offered genuinely free slots; double-booking is a staff power.
Where the rule applies
The same check runs everywhere an appointment lands on the grid: the booking panel, drag-and-drop moves, resizes (which refuse to overlap the next booking), and each occurrence of a recurring series — a clashing occurrence is skipped rather than stacked.
Changing the setting takes effect immediately for future bookings and moves; it doesn't retroactively rearrange anything already on the grid.
Common questions
Why do I see "That slot was just taken" when the slot looked free?
Someone else booked it between your screen loading and your click — often the other front-desk terminal, or an online booking landing at the same moment. The calendar refreshes and you pick again.
How do overlapping appointments look on the calendar?
Side by side in the provider's column, each at partial width, so neither hides the other.
Can I allow overlaps for just one provider?
No — Allow double-booking is a business-wide scheduling rule.
Does allowing overlaps affect rooms and machines?
No. Resource conflicts always block, because two clients genuinely can't share one laser. Overlap permission applies to the provider's time only.
